Why did you major in English?

I've always loved reading!

Tell us about a skill you learned/developed as an English major that has helped you out in the "real world"

As an English major, I developed analytical skills as well as the ability to express myself clearly through writing.  I also gained new perspectives and learned about different cultures.  Furthermore, I think that reading literature promotes empathy and ultimately makes one more fully human.

What was the best English class you took at CUA and why?

It's difficult to chose (I enjoyed so many classes!), but I especially loved my senior seminar class with Dr. Okuma.  The class happened to include only girls, and we drank tea each week as we discussed and analyzed literature.  We also shared ideas and helped each other understand the readings in different ways.  I loved our class discussions and learned a lot from both Dr. Okuma and my peers!

If you could give one piece of advice to current students, what would it be?

Take advantage of the fact that most of the professors at Catholic truly enjoy teaching and care about the students.  So many of them are happy to meet over coffee to discuss anything!  They are great role models and it's a wonderful opportunity to talk with them.

Which text was your favorite to read while you were a student at CUA? In which class did you read it?

I really enjoyed reading Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.  I read it in Dr. Rainof Mas's Narrative course.

What’s next for you?

I hope to pursue a teaching career and instill in my students a love of learning!
