Research interests: Teaching writing, American poetry since 1850, prosody, stylistics, composition theory and pedagogy, intersections of rhetoric and poetics.
Publications include articles in books and journals on prosody theory, Whitman, T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, composition, classical rhetoric, critical literacy, theory and pedagogy, and language and civil society.
She was the director of the National Capital Area Writing Project from 1982 to 1990.
